Dynamic and celebrated Australian mezzo-soprano, Sian Sharp, has been described as “one of Opera Australia’s most versatile and accomplished singers” (Australian Arts Review).

In 2023, she reprised the roles of Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Giovanna and Maddalena (Rigoletto), and featured as La Muse in Damiano Michieletto’s new production of Les contes d’Hoffmann for Opera Australia. She also sang in Sydney Philharmonia’s presentation of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.

In 2024 Sian continues her long association with the national company, appearing as Dodo (Breaking the Waves), La Zelatrice (Suor Angelica), 2nd Lady (The Magic Flute) and covering Idamante (Idomeneo) and Gertrude (Hamlet). Concert appearances include Rossweisse (Die Walküre) for the Sydney Symphony, Hadyn’s Harmoniemesse for the Tasmanian Symphony, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah for Sydney Philharmonia.

Other roles for Opera Australia include the title role in Carmen, Amneris (Aida), Marchesa Melibea (Il viaggio a Reims), Dulcinée (Don Quichotte), Waltraute and Siegrune (Der Ring des Nibelungen), Maddalena/Giovanna  (Rigoletto), Cherubino/Marcellina (Le nozze di Figaro), Olga (Eugene Onegin), Suzuki (Madama Butterfly), Dorabella (Così fan tutte), Rosina (Il barbiere di Sivigila), Arsace (Partenope), Federica (Luisa Miller), Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Annio (La clemenza di Tito), Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Stéphano (Romeo and Juliet), Nancy (Albert Herring), Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Inez (Il trovatore), Lola (Cavalleria rusticana), Emilia (Otello), Pantalis and Marta (Mefistofele), Kitchen Boy (Rusalka) and Page (Salome). Sian has also appeared with Opera Australia in concert as Bersi (Andrea Chenier) and Albine (Thaïs), as well as in The Domain, New Year’s Eve Gala Concerts and their Great Opera Hits presentations.

Other concert performances have included those with the Queensland Symphony in Handel’s Messiah, the Sydney Symphony in Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Melbourne Symphony as Mary in The Flying Dutchman. For Sydney Philharmonia, she has sung in Bach’s St. John PassionElijah and The Dream of Gerontius.
