Caitlin Hulcup

Caitlin Hulcup made her European debut at the Wiener Staatsoper as Enriquetta in I puritani and has since established her career at major opera houses internationally as a leading interpreter of early music and classical repertoire.

Operatic highlights include Iseult in Le Vin herbé for Welsh National Opera, Penelope in The Return of Ulysses for Royal Opera House, the title role in Radamisto at the Kennedy Centre in Washington, Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice in Helsinki and Rosina in Il barbiere di Sivillia at the Wiener Staatsoper. She debuted Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier under Zubin Mehta at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, reprising the role for Bolshoi Theatre Moscow and National Centre for the Performing Arts Beijing. She has performed Calbo in Maometto II for Garsington Opera, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni at Palau de les Arts Valencia, Sesto in La clemenza di Tito in Taipei, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel at Grange Park Opera, Idamante in Idomeneo at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon and Fricka in Die Walküre and Das Rheingold at the Esplanade Singapore with Orchestra of the Music Makers.

Caitlin has regularly returned to Australia in notable performances such as Idamante for Opera Australia, Romeo in I Capuleti e i Montecchi with Victorian Opera and the title role in Griselda, Irene in Theodora and Iphigénie in Iphigénie en Tauride for Pinchgut Opera.

Her concert repertoire includes Das Knaben Wunderhorn at the Sydney Opera House, Das Lied von der Erde for Noord Nederlands Orkest, Mahler's Symphony No. 8 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Mahler's Symphony No. 2 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, in Singapore with Orchestra of the Music Makers and at Vienna’s Musikverein. She has sung the Angel in Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius at the Newbury Festival and in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9  with Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and with Gustavo Dudamel in Venezuela.

Over the course of her career Caitlin has often performed with leading early music conductors. She has worked with René Jacobs (Diana/Il Destino in La Calisto at La Monnaie), William Christie (Cyrus in Belshazzar at Salle Playel and the Barbican), Christian Currnyn (Aristeus in Orpheus at the Royal Opera House) and Alan Curtis (Ariodante in Braunschweig, Cesare in Catone in Utica at Théâtre des Champs Elysees and Alceste in Admeto at Theatre an der Wien). She has performed as Orfeo in Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice with Kenneth Montgomery and Dido in Dido and Aeneas with Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican.

Commercial CD releases include Artaxerses for Linn Records with Ian Page, Vivaldi's Griselda and Theodora for Pinchgut Opera conducted by Erin Helyard, Iphigénie en Tauride with conductor Anthony Walker and Maometto II with David Parry. 

Caitlin received the Opera Foundation Australia’s Vienna State Opera Award. She formerly taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London is now a Professor of Voice at the Universität der Künste Berlin.
