Ryusuke Numajiri divides his time between Germany, where he has been musical director of Theater LŁbeck since 2013, and Japan - where he is head of the Tokyo Mitaka Philharmonia (formerly Tokyo Mozart Players) and artistic director of Biwako Hall in Otsu.

Since winning the 40th Besanşon International Conducting Competition in 1990, he has been invited to lead many of the world's foremost orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulous, Ensemble Orchestre de Paris, Deutsches Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Duesseldorf Symphony Orchestra, Staadtskapelle Darmstad, Staadtskapelle Weimar, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra and NHK Symphony Orchestra. In 1999, EMI recorded his performance of Gubaidulina's The Canticle of the Sun with the London Symphony Orchestra and Mstislav Rostropovich as soloist.
